As a person centred counsellor I will never tell you what to do. This is because I believe you are the only person who knows what is best for you, because you are the only person living your life. It might be difficult to believe this yourself right now, but hopefully through working together you will begin to listen and trust your own judgements and decisions.
What I will do is listen without judgement, offer you warmth, compassion and understanding, and pick up on your feelings and thoughts to help you see your situation from a fresh perspective. My strongest tool is my empathy. I often sense what a client is really feeling even when it is hidden from them. This new insight can make all the difference in helping you become 'unstuck'.
The most powerful aspect of our work together will be our relationship. How you feel, think and act with me can be an indicator of how you are in your relationships with others. We will explore this together, helping you overcome barriers to developing more healthy and balanced relationships with family and friends.
No matter what you talk about in the counselling session, I will genuinely and unconditionally accept you just as you are. This will hopefully help you to accept yourself too.
Everything you share in the session will remain confidential. This is essential for you to be able to trust me and feel safe.
I follow the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy's Ethical Framework, which places confidentiality at the heart of everything I do. However, there are some exceptions when confidentiality may need to be broken. If I am significantly concerned about your safety or someone else's I may need to share my concerns with the appropriate agency. If this was to happen, unless there was an emergency, I would always strive to gain your consent first.
